Orlando City SC linked with sensational free agent swoop

Just three days after he announced his departure from New York City FC, the Daily Express have today linked Orlando City SC with a swoop for free agent Frank Lampard.

Speculation has ran wild regarding the 38-year-old’s next career move this week but this latest report claims both Jason Kreis‘ Lions and LA Galaxy are front-runners for his signature.

Also mentioning that Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire are keen as well as Major League Soccer new boys Atlanta United, the link appears threadbare right now but the prospect is certainly an interesting one.

With Frank Lampard representing somebody who would undoubtedly command a Designated Player salary at Orlando City Stadium, most Orlando City SC supporters would admit that the Lions haven’t made the most out of DP status in MLS to date.

While City fans still await news regarding who is being cut and retained from Jason Kreis‘ 2016 roster, central midfield isn’t the most pressing cause of concern for strengthening right now.

After a slow start to his Lions career, Antonio Nocerino steadily showed his worth in 2016 while Cristian Higuita finished the season strongly after slipping behind Servando Carrasco in the midfield pecking order.

As for Frank Lampard, the former England international recently departed Yankee Stadium having scored 15 goals in 31 appearances during his stop-start New York City FC career.

Would Frank Lampard be a good or bad signing for Orlando City SC?

  1. He would be a shocking signing! Did you watch him play at all last season?
His legs have gone, and he looked completely disinterested in working for his teammates last year.
We don’t need overrated, past it, primadona players like him at this club.
I wouldn’t play him ahead of Kaka, Nocerino, Higuita… or even Carrasco for that matter.
I’d only take him a Baptista-like deal, of $2k a week, and no more than 20 minutes a game. What an appalling waste of resources he’d be!

    • Thanks for your comment Chris. A year older as well, I think there would be more questions than answers with his signing.

I think I speak for most City fans when saying the most pressing concern this off-season is strengthening the defence
