Orlando City SC ceased their scoreless run of three games with an encouraging 2-2 draw over 3,000 miles away from home at Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.
Coming as a huge relief to Lions supporters in the midst of a difficult period for the club following Adrian Heath’s exit, Bobby Murphy‘s side rallied well in a game they might have even won through David Mateos late on.
Even without the turmoil of losing Inchy, this current tough streak of three consecutive away games would test most Major League Soccer outfits at the best of times.
However, following Orlando City SC‘s midweek 2-0 loss at New York Red Bulls, to earn a draw at BC Place represented good work at the farthest outpost in all of MLS.
Travelling to old foes Columbus Crew up next, Lions supporters are that much more hopeful following the performance against the ‘Caps whereby the likes of Servando Carrasco and Hadji Barry impressed after receiving a start with the Lions suffering multiple absentees.
Despite horribly blazing a second-half penalty kick over the bar that would’ve given Orlando City SC a 2-3 lead, Julio Baptista‘s performance was also strong with the Brazilian proving he is far more than an impact sub alone.
Elsewhere, the performance of Luke Boden was particularly impressive while Joe Bendik was an assured presence as always but it must be said that the defensive partnership of Seb Hines and David Mateos still looks shaky.
It was also great to see Cyle Larin back on the scoresheet with the City striker scoring a fantastic hanging header to tie the game up 2-2 in his Canadian homeland of course.
The most important thing going forward is the fact that the Lions showed plenty of heart and fight to reassure supporters that our 2016 MLS Cup play-off qualification goal is still very much possible.
