Bad refereeing calls happen. It’s part of sport. Orlando City SC aren’t perfect and make mistakes too. However, this blog is to highlight the consistent and continued incompetency of PRO Referees since the Lions joined MLS in 2015.
After a really poor call by Joe Dickerson in yesterday’s 2-2 draw at Austin FC, Orlando City UK lists what we believe to be 9 of Orlando City SC‘s worst MLS calls by PRO Referees.
We reiterate that these opinions are the thoughts of Orlando City UK (Taylor Williams), not Orlando City SC.
1. Joe Dickerson @ Austin FC – May 22, 2022

2022 – 2 yellows in 2 minutes for Schlegel at Austin. For the second, Schlegel’s arms down by his side facing an ATX free-kick. 𝗝𝗼𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 calls handball, handing a second yellow (red) & penalty to ATX. PK scored (1-2). pic.twitter.com/5VHyAuJM1c

2. Ismir Pekmic @ Chicago Fire – March 5, 2022

2022 – At 0-0, Urso’s deflected shot beat Chicago’s Slonina. After a LONG Video Review, 𝗜𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗸𝗺𝗶𝗰 ruled out the goal for interpreting an Ercan Kara handball in the build-up. Hardly a “clear and obvious” error then? 🙄 pic.twitter.com/Ws2wHthR3u

3. Allen Chapman vs Nashville SC – October 31, 2021
🧵 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗥𝗢’𝗗 | 𝗔 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵
2021 – Tied 1-1 at 90+, Alexandre Pato struck Nashville’s bar before Andrés Perea thought he’d scored a playoff clinching goal. After VAR, 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗺𝗮𝗻 ruled that Daryl Dike had fouled Alistair Johnston in the build-up. pic.twitter.com/11fHZppCER

4. Alan Kelly @ Philadelphia Union – September 19, 2021
🧵 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗥𝗢’𝗗 | 𝗔 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵
2021 – Wagner’s deflected strike put Union 1-0. But Przybylko fouled Schlegel in the first phase. Linesman flagged for this but 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘆 ignored it. Monteiro was in Gallese’s eye-line for Wagner’s strike but the goal stood. pic.twitter.com/SneO7BCtFF

5. Allen Chapman vs New York City FC – November 21, 2020
🧵 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗥𝗢’𝗗 | 𝗔 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵
2020 – Farcical PK’s taking 23 minutes. Saving Taty’s penalty to win the game, Gallese sent off for coming off his line & dissent. Then 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗺𝗮𝗻 allowed OC to make an illegal sub. Lost all control, despite Godrigo. 😇 pic.twitter.com/aCDoT4BXE4

6. Ramy Touchan vs Columbus Crew – November 4, 2020
🧵 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗥𝗢’𝗗 | 𝗔 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵
2020 – With OC 1-0 up, Nani was sent off for fouling Crew’s Artur. 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝘆 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻 checked VAR before the red. With Nani suspended for an important finale vs. Nashville, the Independent Review Panel later rescinded the red. pic.twitter.com/sQ6mQt3OKL

7. Silviu Petrescu @ Columbus Crew – July 21, 2018
🧵 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗥𝗢’𝗗 | 𝗔 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵
2018 – As Orlando led 1-2, 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗶𝘂 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂 swung the momentum. Farcical penalty to Gyasi Zardes (88 minutes). Replays showed Patrick Mullins tripping over thin air, not R. J. Allen. Columbus’ Wil Trapp won it 3-2 at 90+. pic.twitter.com/Pp8npdg9HO

8. Jorge Gonzalez @ New York Red Bulls – August 12, 2017
🧵 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗥𝗢’𝗗 | 𝗔 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵
2017 – With Orlando 3-1 down, 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗻𝘇𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘇 controversially & bizarrely handed Kaká a red card after VAR when the Brazilian clearly jokingly put his hands around ex-Orlando team-mate Aurélien Collin’s mouth from behind. pic.twitter.com/F9Wd4RLHrx

9. Ted Unkel vs Chicago Fire – June 4, 2017
🧵 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗥𝗢’𝗗 | 𝗔 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 🧵
2017 – 2 reds vs. Fire. Nocerino’s later red the right call. But on 26 minutes, 𝗧𝗲𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗹 gave Rafael Ramos a straight red, a decision later rescinded by the Independent Review Panel. Orlando miraculously drew 0-0 (9 men). pic.twitter.com/7jaw1HvzYn

So there you have it.
There seems to be an unusually disproportionate amount of really poor refereeing decisions against Orlando City SC down the years.
Every Major League Soccer team receives bad calls, I get it, but still?
At Orlando City SC, we don’t make excuses and only ask for a better standard of refereeing.
In life, it’s not good to dwell and Oscar Pareja will be reminding his playing squad about what they did right in an admirable 2-2 draw at Austin FC.
Right now, we hope the Orlando City SC locker room can rid themselves of any lingering negativity before facing Inter Miami this Wednesday in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.
Again, these opinions are the thoughts of Orlando City UK (Taylor Williams), not Orlando City SC.
