Orlando City UK’s 2024 Leagues Cup Statement

Orlando City UK was shocked and bitterly disappointed at Major League Soccer for diluting the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Back in March, it was confirmed that only eight MLS first teams would participate – with Orlando City SC missing out.

Only five years old, Leagues Cup has effectively replaced a legitimate U.S. Open Cup this season.

We believe this decision is highly disrespectful, lacks integrity, and completely undermines the history of the oldest cup competition for soccer in the United States.

At this time, Orlando City UK cannot extend its support to the 2024 Leagues Cup.

Recognising that our withdrawal wasn’t a decision made by the Orlando City SC players or coaching staff, we wish them the very best of luck in the tournament.

However, there will be no Leagues Cup Stats Previews or match coverage from us this July / August.

While we will always support Orlando City SC, we believe there is currently a wider issue at hand – one that we intend to raise awareness about at this time.

We eagerly anticipate Orlando City SC returning to a complete and proper U.S. Open Cup in 2025.

Especially after our triumphant tournament victory in 2022one of my most cherished memories in soccer.
