Back to Inter&Co Stadium we go – but after four 0-0 draws in our last five MLS outings, can someone please find the net? Orlando City SC extended their unbeaten league run to eight matches last weekend, but it was another frustrating stalemate at 10-man Chicago Fire. Thankfully, our I-4 Derby win (0-5) over Tampa Bay Rowdies in the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday served as a timely morale booster.
Now, it’s time to turn our resilience into results – but that’s easier said than done. New England Revolution visit Central Florida in red-hot form, riding a four-game winning streak. Moreover, both sides boast stingy defensive records too. City haven’t conceded in 530 minutes, while the Revs are on a 393-minute shutout streak – so something has to give. Let’s just hope it’s not another goalless grind!
Last time out
Last night, Orlando City SC cruised into the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, thrashing old USL rival Tampa Bay Rowdies 0-5 at Al Lang Stadium. A heavily rotated XI saw 16-year-old Gustavo Caraballo net a first-half brace on his first senior start, becoming the youngest goalscorer in club history. The teenager performed a Kaká-inspired celebration on a night where Ramiro Enrique, Duncan McGuire, and Dagur Dan Thórhallsson also found the net. The Lions controlled proceedings after a slow opening, scoring three times before the break and dominating the second-half. Javier Otero, stepping in for Pedro Gallese, kept the clean sheet – our sixth straight shutout in all competitions. After the game, Oscar Pareja praised our balance between defensive solidity and attacking fluency, calling the performance “very complete”. With the win, Orlando improved to 8-0-0 in competitive matches against the Rowdies and set up a Round of 16 home tie against Nashville SC at Inter&Co Stadium on Wednesday, May 21.
Last head-to-head
On September 14, 2024, Orlando City SC secured a commanding 3-0 win over New England Revolution at Inter&Co Stadium, as Oscar Pareja tied Dominic Kinnear (170) for the fifth-most regular season coaching wins in MLS history. After weathering early Revs pressure, City took control on 23 minutes when Iván Angulo set up Rafael Santos for a stunning long-range strike. Just before half-time, Facundo Torres doubled our lead from the penalty spot after Carles Gil’s handball. Revs pushed to respond in the second-half, but Pedro Gallese made a crucial save to deny Gil’s dangerous free-kick. Duncan McGuire sealed the win on 74 minutes, finishing a perfectly-timed pass from Nicolás Lodeiro. The victory marked City’s first-ever MLS regular season sweep over Revs and extended our strong run of form to six wins in eight MLS matches.
What’s at stake this time?
After 11 games played, Orlando City SC remain seventh in the Eastern Conference. Currently, we are seven points behind new leaders Columbus Crew. Eight MLS games unbeaten? Check. Five straight clean sheets? Also check. But despite those positives, things are far from perfect. We’ve drawn four of our last five league matches 0-0, and that lack of cutting edge is starting to undo all the good work at the back. In short, Eduard Atuesta has been sorely missed. We are 4-1-2 with 18 goals and no shutouts in the Colombian’s seven starts. In the four games he hasn’t started, we’re 0-4-0 – highlighting how vital his line-breaking passing is. After blowing away Atlanta United 3-0, we looked to have turned a corner. But it’s been two steps forward and three steps back. Now, all eyes are on Oscar Pareja’s tactical call. Does Papi stick with a 4-4-2 and our Luis Muriel – Duncan McGuire partnership, or return to his more familiar shape? This season alone, we’ve seen the 4-2-3-1, a 3-4-2-1, and now 4-4-2 – but despite these tweaks, we’ve had too many draws. At left back, David Brekalo has brought defensive steel in place of the more adventurous Rafael Santos, but at home, we need to be braver. As for New England Revolution, they’re flying. Previously under pressure following a dreadful 2024, Caleb Porter is now turning things around. Winning their last four consecutive MLS fixtures, they punished a poor Toronto FC side 0-2 at BMO Field last Saturday. With Revs in fantastic form, the Lions face a tough test here.
