What on Earth has happened to our game management? 🤦🏽‍♂️ For the second straight match, Orlando City SC took a 1-0 lead… and threw it away. Last night’s 1-2 home loss to New York City FC was gutting. Not just because of the result, but because it followed a now-familiar script – take control, waste chances, and collapse late. Further evidence that we’re feeling the pressure, that’s now four games without a win and just two points from twelve. It’s hard to believe this is the same team that dismantled Inter Miami 0-3 back in May.

With our season slipping away, we need to respond and fast. Saturday sees the Lions travel to Gillette Stadium to face New England Revolution – a team sitting 11th but desperate to claw their way back into the playoff picture. We’ve only ever won ONCE in Foxborough (1-2-6), but that lone victory (1-3) came just a year ago. With the standings tightening, form slipping, and confidence clearly shaken, we need a repeat of that result… badly.

Last time out

Last night, Orlando City SC suffered a crushing 1-2 home defeat to New York City FC – extending our winless run to four matches and making it four straight without a win at Inter&Co Stadium (0-1-3). Despite Robin Jansson giving the Lions a deserved 36th minute lead after David Brekalo flicked on Martín Ojeda’s corner, late defensive lapses proved costly yet again. Ojeda’s assist not only extended his club record goal contribution streak to 8 MLS games. It also made him just the second player in club history – after Nani – to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists in a single season. However, missed chances from Tincho, Luis Muriel, Ramiro Enrique, and newly named MLS All-Star Marco Pašalić kept NYCFC in the game. Disaster struck late on 87 minutes when Rodrigo Schlegel’s clearance deflected in off Kyle Smith for a cruel own goal. Then, deep in stoppage time, Alonso Martínez scored on a breakaway after the Lions were caught out from their own corner. Orlando dominated shots (26–11) and created plenty, but a lack of composure in the final third cost us big time. Now winless in our last seven against NYCFC (0-2-5), and with just one goal scored in each of our last five home games, our season is now in real danger of collapsing.

Last head-to-head

On May 10, Orlando City SC drew 3-3 with New England Revolution in a rain-soaked thriller at Inter&Co Stadium. Despite leading 2-0 and 3-2, the Lions couldn’t hold on. Ultimately, defensive lapses and Carles Gil’s late penalty denied us all three points. The night belonged to marvellous Martín Ojeda, who bagged his first professional hat-trick – Orlando’s first in any competition for a decade. Tincho’s opener, smashed in off the underside of the crossbar, was his fifth of the campaign — already one more than he managed in all of 2024, and matching his 2023 output. The result also brought Pedro Gallese’s impressive 563-minute shutout streak to an end – the sixth-longest streak by a goalkeeper in MLS history. While frustrated by the defensive mistakes, Oscar Pareja praised our attacking intent.

What’s at stake this time?

Orlando City SC are sixth in the East with 35 points from 23 games, but losing 1-2 to NYCFC means they’re now just one point behind in seventh. Within touching distance of the Eastern Conference summit in May, we’re now two points above the Wild Card line and three above the red line. Four games without a win and only two points from a possible twelve have left our season hanging by a thread. And worryingly, we’ve now blown two 1-0 leads in a row, completely surrendering our once-sharp killer instinct in the final third. Often revered for holding narrow leads, Oscar Pareja’s side are faltering and urgently need to respond. Despite all our good work earlier in the campaign – especially that 0-3 win at Inter Miami – we risk throwing it all away. As a result, for the first time this season, fans are looking down the standings instead of up. Now visiting New England Revolution, Caleb Porter’s side sit 11th with 25 points from 22 games. Like NYCFC, they’re eager to climb, but are winless in seven straight and just lost 5-3 at New York Red Bulls last night. Winning just ONCE at Gillette Stadium in nine visits (1-2-6), history isn’t on our side. However, that lone victory (1-3) came on July 13 last year, so hopefully we get a repeat.
