After Tom Bogert broke the transfer story earlier today, Orlando City SC have officially announced the signing of Tyrese Spicer from Toronto FC.

In return, The Reds have received $225,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM) and $275,000 in 2026 GAM. An additional $50,000 in GAM will be sent to Toronto if certain performance-based incentives are met.

The first new signing for City this MLS Secondary Transfer Window, 24-year-old Spicer has been handed the #14 jersey at Inter&Co Stadium – last worn by Nicolás Lodeiro in 2024.

Who is Tyrese Spicer?

Born on December 4, 2000, in Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago, Tyrese Spicer began playing youth football at age six with the Trincity Nationals.

The rest of his youth career saw him play for Central FC, St. Mary’s College, and St. Augustine Secondary School.

While at St. Augustine, he earned MVP and top scorer honours while helping his team to a North Zone Championship.

Standing at 6 ft 1 in, Spicer is left footed and predominantly plays as a left winger.

In 2020, he moved to the United States to play college soccer with Lipscomb University in Tennessee.

While at Lipscomb, Spicer quickly made a name for himself as one of the most exciting players in NCAA Division I.

Over four seasons with the Bisons, Spicer tallied 29 goals and 18 assists in 57 appearances.

In 2023, he earned ASUN Player of the Year honours after leading the conference with 14 goals and 3 assists in just 16 matches, scoring in 10 straight games to start the season.

He finished as the ASUN leader in multiple categories, including goals, points, shots on goal, and game-winners, and led the nation in goals per game.

Spicer earned First Team All-American and All-Region honours from United Soccer Coaches and was a semi-finalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy.

His earlier seasons included ASUN First and Second Team selections, with consistent goal contributions each year.

Prior to joining MLS, Spicer also represented Tennessee SC (2022) and Des Moines Menace (2023) too.

Spicer’s MLS career so far

Tyrese Spicer’s standout college career saw him selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft.

A rare feat, this underlined his potential and status as one of the top young attacking talents in North America.

Part of Toronto FC’s first team since 2024, Spicer has made 42 appearances and 21 starts across all competitions, including 40 appearances and 20 starts in MLS play.

During that time, the Trinidad and Tobago international has recorded six goals and two assists for TFC, with two of those goals coming in Canadian Championship matches.

One of his four MLS goals actually came at Inter&Co Stadium too!

On April 27, 2024, Spicer’s 87th-minute equaliser cancelled out Duncan McGuire’s opener (1-1), painfully paving the way for Prince Owusu to score a 90th-minute game winner (1-2) for Toronto FC.

While he hasn’t set the world alight, particularly in a struggling side, Spicer has shown flashes of his trademark speed, dribbling, and flair – under John Herdman and then Robin Fraser.

He primarily plays as a left winger but has also featured on the right flank, highlighting his flexibility in multiple attacking roles.

A full international with Trinidad and Tobago, Spicer has already earned six senior caps for the Soca Warriors, further adding to his experience at the top level.

Introductory words

General Manager & Sporting Director, Ricardo Moreira said: “We’re excited to welcome Tyrese to Orlando.

“He’s a hardworking, left-footed talent from the Trinidad and Tobago national team who brings additional depth and energy to our side.

“His relentless work rate and ability to stretch the field will give us a much-needed boost and add another dimension to our attack moving forward.”

With Spicer now added to our first team roster, here’s how Orlando City SC’s 2025 squad is looking.

Is Tyrese Spicer the right fit for Orlando City SC?

In short, yes!

We finally have a natural left footer on the left wing, giving Oscar Pareja greater tactical flexibility out wide.

And given Papi’s preference for quick, technical wingers who can both create and stretch defences, it’s a promising fit.

Highly versatile, Tyrese Spicer is capable of delivering accurate crosses with his left foot or cutting inside from the right flank.

Crucially, he’ll provide much-needed competition for first choice left winger Iván Angulo, whose intense load demands rotation over the course of a long season.

Having logged 1,763 minutes (25 appearances, 23 starts) so far this MLS season, Angulo only has six assists and ZERO goals.

With Yutaro Tsukada out for the entire season through injury, Angulo has been relied upon by Oscar Pareja week in and week out, even when badly out of form.

With many City supporters growing frustrated by Angulo’s inconsistency and end product, the arrival of Tyrese Spicer should push him to deliver more regularly.

Unlike Angulo, who tends to cut inside onto his right foot, Spicer is more likely to beat his full back on the outside, thanks to his natural left footedness.

Already accustomed to the demands of MLS, he should be a valuable asset as Orlando aim to finish strong down the stretch.

Tyrese Spicer becomes the third Trinidad and Tobago international to play for Orlando City SC in MLS, following both Kevin Molino and Greg Ranjitsingh.

Hopefully, Spicer can follow in the footsteps of Molino, who remains a fan favourite to this day.
