Only a few hours after announcing the signing of Jake Mulraney, Orlando City SC yesterday announced the signing of Gastón González too.

The 20-year-old was already rumoured to be joining the Lions in May, but González has already been placed on City’s Season Ending Injury list after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury playing for Unión de Santa Fe on April 19.

Linked with Orlando City SC since December, Gastón González will be eyeing 2023 as his breakout Major League Soccer season after his untimely injury.

With Silvester van der Water also currently injured, yesterday’s signing of Jake Mulraney appears shrewd.

Gastón González has joined the Lions as a U22 Initiative player, signing a three-year contract at Exploria Stadium.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations & General Manager, Luiz Muzzi, said: “Following Gastón’s unfortunate injury we were able to restructure our deal for him to join the club.

“For us now, Gastón’s recovery is what is most important and we will give him all the necessary resources to come back healthier and stronger.

“Although we are saddened by the circumstances delaying his on-field arrival, injuries are a part of the game and we’re very excited about having him here, his future with us and we look forward to him joining the team when fully healthy.”

Who is Gastón González?

Gastón González is an Argentine left or right winger signed from Argentine Primera División side Unión de Santa Fe.

Just 20-years-old, the winger tallied 8 goals and 7 assists across 58 appearances (all competitions) for Tatengue.

Left-footed, González stands at 6 ft 0 in.

Nicknamed “Picotón”, González has represented his hometown club since the age of seven.

He graduated from Unión de Santa Fe’s youth ranks to the first team in August 2020.

Back in 2019, Gastón González was selected to train against Argentina’s senior squad at the Copa América in Brazil.

Early on, there were clearly high hopes for González’s career following this special invitation.
