With England’s January transfer window deadline having just closed at 11pm (GMT), Orlando City SC have now announced that Duncan McGuire has joined EFL Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a six-month loan. With Tom Bogert confirming that the loan fee is worth $700,000 with a purchase option of around $7 million, plus $2.5 million in add-ons, McGuire’s move across the pond comes after he reportedly rejected a contract extension in Central Florida. This alone is merely half the story however!

A high drama situation that has been unravelling all week, Blackburn looked all set to wrap up the deal yesterday. However, despite McGuire flying to England on Wednesday to seal his transfer to Ewood Park, Rovers then pulled out of a rumoured $4 million deal for the recently capped USMNT striker at the eleventh hour due to ‘financial reasons’. This not only left McGuire – on his transatlantic flight at the time – in limbo but also the Orlando City SC Front Office and City supporters who all faced an unprecedented transfer saga, or should we say soap opera, that has truly had supporters, journalists, and pundits transfixed since last weekend. News of the Blackburn deal collapsing then alerted McGuire’s other suitors Sheffield Wednesday with the striker spotted at Kenwood Park Hotel in Sheffield this morning.

Are you still following? From here, after cheekily attempting to hijack Orlando City SC’s move for David Brekalo, Blackburn remarkably re-entered negotiations for Duncan McGuire, and at 4:15pm this afternoon, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano put everybody out of their misery by tweeting that McGuire was “on his way to Blackburn to sign on loan with an option to buy clause.”

A saga that has had more twists and turns than the VelociCoaster at Universal Islands of Adventure, it’s been one of the craziest weeks in Orlando City SC‘s MLS history. With Duncan McGuire joining Rovers on loan until July, City must now wait to cash in on the 22-year-old with the start of our 2024 campaign looming large. A shock for some and an inevitability for others, City have now been forced back into the transfer market to find a starting centre forward replacement for the recently capped USMNT striker with Colombian international Luis Muriel looking the most likely candidate as we speak.

In Blackburn Rovers’ official release, they confirmed that Duncan McGuire “joins on loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.”

With Orlando City SC kicking off the year with a 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup Round One tie at Cavalry FC on February 21, City must now find a special replacement – and fast!

After trying and failing to sign Duncan McGuire on loan back in December, Blackburn have now finally got their man.

Rovers Director of Football, Gregg Broughton said: “We are really pleased to have secured the signing of Duncan McGuire.

“A Nebraska boy, whose rise to the MLS is a great story and now we hope to continue that trajectory with Blackburn Rovers.

“Quick, with good movement and a great finisher, Duncan has all of the attributes needed to follow in the footsteps of the many great strikers who have worn our famous colours.

“I have to give our recruitment team great credit for identifying him, tracking his progress and convincing him that this was the perfect next move for him in his career.”

With Rovers currently placed eighteenth in the EFL Championship, the Ewood Park side are eight points above the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Blackburn remain in the 2023/24 FA Cup and will host Newcastle United in the fifth round on February 28 after defeating Wrexham 4-1 on Monday.

Duncan McGuire will now compete with fellow centre forwards Sam Gallagher, Harry Leonard, and Semir Telalović for a starting berth at Ewood Park.

As for other Americans who’ve played for Blackburn Rovers in the past, these include Brad Friedel, Jemal Johnson, Jermaine Jones, and Roy Wegerle.

Speaking after the move was confirmed, Luiz Muzzi said: “It has always been very important for our club to find and provide the best opportunities for players to continue making strides in their career, and this situation with Duncan was no different.

“Duncan is a player that, from the time we drafted him to now, grew quickly over the course of the year.

“We’re happy to have found an opportunity for him to play in England, an ask he made of the club to accomplish a personal goal of his.

“We’re looking forward to him making the most of his time with Blackburn and will be cheering him on from afar.”

As for Duncan McGuire himself, he said: “I am really excited about the opportunity to test myself abroad.

“I know I would not have this opportunity without the support of my teammates, my coaches and the front office at Orlando City.

“Just 12 months ago I was leaving college soccer hoping to make my way, and I believe I have made the most of the opportunities that were presented to me in this time.

“Thank you again to my family, my teammates and all the Orlando City fans and staff.

“My goal is to go to England and show everyone what I am capable of!”

How Duncan McGuire’s transfer saga unfolded

As more and more news was released regarding Duncan McGuireOrlando City SC supporters started feeling iffy as they awaited an official announcement and some clarity about the whole situation.

My reaction to Duncan McGuire joining Blackburn Rovers

All week, I’ve toyed with being disappointed in Duncan McGuire for fleeing Inter&Co Stadium after just one breakout season.

It’s never nice to hear that one of your key players wants out.

Then feeling feelings of resignation and acceptance, I even felt pride that yet another Orlando City SC striker would be moving to Europe.

After all, following Cyle LarinChris Mueller, and Daryl Dike, City now boast a strong international reputation for nurturing young goalscoring talent.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing – just ask Ajax!

At the start of the week, I wanted to keep him at Orlando City SC at all costs, but when a player’s head has been turned, it’s usually better to move him on.

There’s no two ways about it.

Being initially told that your ideal move to Blackburn Rovers had fallen through mid-flight is a lot to take – especially for a 22-year-old.

Let alone being then immediately thrust back into negotiations with another club in Sheffield Wednesday.

With Owls fans already knowing that Blackburn was McGuire’s first choice, it must’ve been a difficult moment for all parties involved.

At present, ten points separate eighteenth-placed Blackburn and twenty-third-placed Wednesday in the EFL Championship.

With Danny Röhl’s Owls six points adrift of safety in the EFL Championship relegation zone, there’s a very real possibility of the Hillsborough club returning to EFL League One at the first time of asking.

As for Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Rovers, they sit 11 points below the play-off places with 18 games left to play.

With Owls fans enduring something of a toxic relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri, there was always skepticism whether he could actually get a deal for Duncan McGuire over the line.

And most Wednesdayites have now been proven correct.

Playing in Europe is a dream for most young American soccer players, and with Rovers having initially pulled the plug before sealing a loan today, this U-turn seemed very harsh on Duncan McGuire.

Before finally sealing his Rovers move, albeit on loan, last night and this morning must’ve felt very strange in a pressure cooker situation for McGuire.

Ultimately, it has been a messy and sorry situation all round.

Admittedly it was a long time ago, but for those that don’t know, Rovers were Premier League champions back in 1995/95.

A historic club in England, the Ewood Park side are one of the 12 founder members of the Football League.

What happens next?

Of course, attention will now turn to the Orlando City SC Front Office who are desperately seeking a new starting centre forward to contribute immediately.

Orlando City SC supporters aren’t unrealistic.

As a nine-year-old club in a 28-year-old league that is growing all the time, we understand our role in developing players and letting genuine talent experience Europe or South America when the time is right.

Just ask Daryl Dike who joined Barnsley on loan in February 2021 before permanently joining West Bromwich Albion in January 2022.

But Orlando City SC are a big club in Major League Soccer and having finished second in the Supporters’ Shield last season, we have our own lofty ambitions too.

Most City supporters expected that Duncan McGuire may stay one more year with Orlando City SC to develop before seeking pastures new.

Having recently made his senior USMNT debut against Slovenia, the Omaha, Nebraska native clearly feels his European switch will boost his international prospects further.

At the moment, nobody is 100% about what will happen next.

That said, Rudy Galetti tweeted yesterday that Orlando City SC are “seriously interested” in Atalanta’s Colombian international striker Luis Muriel as Duncan McGuire‘s replacement.

Today, fellow Italian journalist Matteo Moretto went even further to tweet that City have already “presented a first offer” for Luis Muriel.

After that, Giorgio Dusi tweeted that Atalanta have rejected Orlando City SC‘s opening offer, deeming it to be “too low”.

Over the coming days and weeks, we’ll have to wait and see whether our Muriel move comes to fruition.

Perhaps I’m reading too much into it but when reacting to McGuire’s move, Taylor Twellman tweeted yesterday that City “have a replacement”.

This is a tweet that Twellman has since deleted, perhaps adding weight to the most recent Muriel murmurings?

One thing is for sure though.

You can expect a lot of finger-pointing at the Orlando City SC Front Office given the timing of McGuire’s loan.

Having now lost our starting centre forward with under a month to go until our first game of 2024, this leaves Luiz MuzziRicardo Moreira, and co with a lot of work to do.

Despite already proving their worth in the transfer market time and time again, it’s far from ideal to be seeking a new number nine in such a crucial position so close to the start of a new season.

Now Ercan Kara is no longer around, City supporters are currently staring down the barrel of having Ramiro Enrique and Jack Lynn as our only two centre forwards at the club.

This is not a slight on these players.

They’re just simply too inexperienced to start for Oscar Pareja‘s side week in and week out – if we are to achieve our 2024 ambitions, that is.

It’s now over to the Orlando City SC Front Office to reinstill some supporter faith after a week that few of us will forget.

My reaction to Blackburn Rovers’ conduct

From the outside looking in, the way Blackburn Rovers have conducted themselves seems very strange.

After all, they were negotiating for our top goalscorer from last season (15 goals in all competitions) at the same time as putting in a cheeky last-minute loan bid for City’s top transfer target David Brekalo.

Don’t get me wrong.

I’m not naive enough to think that longtime transfer targets can’t be stolen away by another club at the last minute.

After all, transfer windows are brutal battlegrounds where the highest bidders usually win.

But it just didn’t seem like the smartest of moves from Blackburn to p*** off Orlando City SC who they were doing business with.

Even Rovers supporters on social media seemed puzzled by the Brekalo link considering they had just signed Kyle McFadzean from Coventry City.

All of this said, Chris Wheatley tweeted that Rovers initially pulled out due to ‘financial reasons’, which is puzzling in itself, considering they have just sanctioned Adam Wharton’s £18 million beat-the-deadline switch to Crystal Palace.

Maybe we’ll find out the finer details as the dust settles, or maybe we’ll never find out.

Crunch boardroom conversations are often sworn to secrecy away from the public domain, leaving supporters like me with little to do but engage in speculation.

Reflecting on Duncan McGuire’s time in Orlando

As is usually the case, little was known about Duncan McGuire when Orlando City SC drafted him as the sixth overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft back on December 21, 2022.

A product of Creighton University, things went bang for McGuire in his third season for Creighton Bluejays men’s soccer, starting all but one of 24 matches and scoring 23 goals, the most in the nation and a new Bluejays single season record.

Enjoying a rookie MLS season for the ages, nobody, nor McGuire himself could’ve foreseen 13 Major League Soccer goals being scored so early into his professional career.

A debut season scoring tally only surpassed by Cyle Larin who bagged an outstanding 17 goals back in 2015, Duncan McGuire‘s 2023 was so good that the Orlando City SC Front Office decided to part ways with Designated Player Ercan Kara midway through the campaign back on September 2.

Unseating a #9 Designated Player during your first ever season as a pro rarely happens in MLS, such was the fast-track nature of McGuire’s meteoric rise.

Grabbing his first City goal on his first City start and MLS debut away at D.C. United back on March 11, Oscar Pareja‘s faith in the 22-year-old was immediately repaid.

It was after Duncan McGuire‘s next goal, a jubilant 88th minute game winner away at Adrian Heath’s Minnesota United (1-2) on April 15, that you could tell our #13 was a player with a natural instinct for goalscoring.

A goal scored at the MLS venue closest to his family home in Omaha, Nebraska, his loved ones watched McGuire snatch this game winner firsthand at Allianz Field.

It’s fair to say that after this, McGuire didn’t look back, grasping his big opportunity as an MLS starter with 11 more goals in the regular season, plus two strikes in the group stage of the 2023 Leagues Cup.

Of all of Duncan McGuire‘s rookie season goals, three more stand out.

Firstly, his 92nd minute equaliser that sealed City’s two-goal comeback at Columbus Crew (2-2) back on May 13.

Looking back, this was the goal that ultimately turned then under pressure Oscar Pareja and Orlando City SC‘s 2023 fortunes around, getting us out of jail just one game after our bitterly disappointing 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup elimination at Charlotte FC, embarrassingly failing to defend our 2022 title at the first hurdle.

After Duncan McGuire rescued this unlikely 2-2 draw, the rookie forward’s then fourth goal of the season heralded the start of a timely personal hot streak and by extension, improved team performances and consistent results.

Secondly, there was McGuire’s game winning goal at Atlanta United (1-2), only our second ever win in Georgia and our first in front of a packed house with our other victory (1-3 in August 2020) taking place behind closed doors due to COVID.

Racing away from the centre back duo of Juan José Purata and Luis Abram, McGuire remained ice cool to simply slide the game winner beyond Brad Guzan who powerlessly performed his familiar “stuck in the mud” routine in goal – you know the one!

Thirdly, there was Duncan McGuire‘s best goal of 2023 and most probably Orlando City SC‘s goal of the season at Toronto FC on 2023 MLS Decision Day.

With no respect for the retiring Michael Bradley, McGuire sprinted forward, latched onto a Mason Stajduhar goal kick, and flicked the ball over the TFC captain.

Expertly keeping it under control, McGuire then unleashed an unerring dipping strike from range past the helpless Sean Johnson to open the scoring at BMO Field.

This goal was significant because it saw Duncan McGuire surpass Damani Ralph (12) for the most goals (13) scored by a draft pick in their first MLS season out of college.

As McGuire continued scoring more goals for Orlando City SC throughout the course of 2023, he picked up affectionate nicknames on social media such as the “Haaland of the Heartlands” and now most famously, “Orlando Runs on Duncan” – a homage to Dunkin’ Donuts’ famous “American Runs on Dunkin’” company slogan.

At The Den, Orlando City SC even released an “Orlando Runs on Duncan” themed hero t-shirt midway through the campaign, admittedly after Capowear Apparel got there first.

In the spirit of Dom Dwyer and Nani before him, Duncan McGuire‘s first City goal on his MLS debut at D.C. United also saw him somersault in celebration.

Becoming McGuire’s trademark ever since, the 22-year-old also enjoys a golf swing celebration too, packing his clubs for his game winning goal that left Atlanta United supporters shell-shocked at City’s impressive comeback at Mercedes-Benz Stadium back on July 15.

Duncan McGuire departs Inter&Co Stadium having made 36 appearances across all competitions for City, scoring 15 goals and tallying three assists in the process.

The fans’ view

With #OCTwitter currently reacting to Duncan McGuire‘s announcement as a Blackburn Rovers player, we gathered the best tweets following his move across the pond.

Good luck at Blackburn Rovers, Duncan!

I won’t lie, I still feel somewhat disappointed.

Maybe I’ll feel better once we’ve signed a new striker as McGuire’s replacement?

But Orlando City UK truly wishes Duncan McGuire the very best of luck as he embarks on the latest chapter of his career this side of the pond.

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, the cold of Northern England shouldn’t faze McGuire one jot!

Intriguingly for British-based City supporters like me, McGuire now plays in the same league as fellow ex-Lion Daryl Dike.

It has also been confirmed that McGuire will wear squad number 50 for Blackburn Rovers despite his favoured number 13 jersey currently being available at Ewood Park.

Perhaps they’re superstitious up in Lancashire?
