Twitter reacts to… the new 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey

After much anticipation, the new 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey – “The Legacy Kit” – has officially been unveiled at Cheyenne Saloon on Church Street as part of the club’s Kickoff to Soccer activation.

Revealing the new look of our road whites just six days before facing Cavalry FC in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup, The Legacy Kit is our sixth away jersey design in Major League Soccer and will be worn in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The early jersey leak

Sadly for our merchandise team, the 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey was leaked by mistake back on January 27.

A PR disaster for Major League Soccer, the leak came from none other than EA Sports FC.

Eagle-eyed gamers noticed all of the 2024 MLS jerseys as new additions in EA Sports FC 24’s January title update.

At this stage, it was clear that Adidas would finally be honouring Orlando City SC‘s triumphant USL era with the incorporation of the club’s original three-headed lion crest and the colour red.

The early jersey tease

After the 2024 MLS jerseys were leaked, the 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey was first teased proper back on January 31.

Orlando City SC tweeted an anniversary logo featuring a red ‘X’ and the text ‘2015 – 2024’ to commemorate our upcoming 10th season in Major League Soccer.

Tweeted along with the hashtag #HonorThyHistory, it was abundantly clear at this stage that Orlando City SC supporters would finally be getting a throwback kit.

February 14 saw Orlando City SC tweet this teaser prior to the February 15 unveiling.

Looking back, even before the leak and the teasers, City supporters received an early clue back on January 19.

In an MLSStore.com leak released by mistake, the purple 2024 Orlando City SC anthem jacket contained red accents.

This initially gave City fans genuine hope of seeing the colour in this away jersey release.

What’s new?

This year, the 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey boasts a clean and modish look.

The incorporation of the club’s original three-headed lion crest is undoubtedly the most eye-catching feature on the jersey front.

Upon closer inspection, the crest has received a contemporary update from our original USL branding.

By including the colour red, this is a first for any Orlando City SC jersey in MLS – home or away.

For many years now, this is something that #OCTwitter has desperately been craving.

Sure to prove a popular design feature among City supporters, red was historically a big part of Orlando City SC‘s original USL identity.

With red featuring on the club’s original three-headed lion crest, Orlando City SC‘s first ever home jersey by Umbro was white with red accents.

In our inaugural USL campaign in 2011 and in 2012 too, our Umbro away jerseys were predominantly red with white accents too.

In 2013, Umbro gave way to Lotto.

Nevertheless, the Italian sports manufacturer created a red third jersey for our penultimate campaign in USL.

Having previously interviewed Kay Rawlins back in November 2020, the Orlando City SC founder exclusively revealed that City first wore red in USL because Umbro didn’t originally have enough purple polyester to cover the club’s needs.

Since entering MLS in 2015, there has only been one nod to our former USL existence.

This was the incorporation of our original three-headed lion crest on the underside of our new crest on the 2015 Orlando City SC home jersey – a nice, albeit small tribute.

So, it’s great that Adidas have now overtly recognised Orlando City SC’s USL tenure, honouring it through the colour red.

Orlando City SC SVP of Brand and Marketing Pedro Araujo said: “We are so proud to introduce a kit that we know our fans will love, one that pays tribute to everyone that has supported and led us to reach our 10th season in MLS.

“The Legacy Kit is designed to recognise just that – the path that has led us here today and the legacy of our early days as a professional soccer franchise in the City Beautiful.

“This kit is a thank you to the players, supporters, staff, partners and community members for which Orlando City would not exist without.

“We hope our fans enjoy and appreciate the details found throughout this jersey, and we can’t wait to continue celebrating our 10th season in MLS with many more surprises throughout the year.”

The 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey carries four colours in total – lavender, glory red, gold, and dark purple.

The iconic three Adidas stripes appear in glory red (not purple) and run part way down the right and left shoulders.

They are are a lighter weight material on the authentic version of the jersey and fabric on the replica version.

Red is also featured on a red, gold, and dark purple one-button round neck collar and on the red and dark purple right and left sleeve cuffs too.

In keeping with the current MLS jersey templates from Adidas, there’s also two vertical red lines that run from each pit down the right and left sides of the jersey, joining together to create a hem at the bottom.

Dark purple features include the Adidas logo, the club’s contemporary Orlando Health sponsor logo, and the bottom of each sleeve cuff.

The Apple TV logo is also dark purple and adorns the left sleeve.

Elsewhere, one MLS sleeve patch with dark purple lettering (and bordering) and lavender colouring features on the left sleeve.

Later this February, the right sleeve will also feature a CONCACAF Champions Cup patch for our tournament participation.

The updated away design sees a round neck retained, just like we’ve seen on our last two releases (The Sunshine Kit and The Wall Kit) but this time, it is a one-button round neck collar.

Four of Orlando City SC‘s previous six away jerseys have included a V-neck as an alternative.

Dark purple lettering and numbers in the contemporary MLS 25th anniversary font adorn the back of the jersey.

Unique features

Firstly, the contemporary update to our original three-headed lion crest is a heat transfer on the authentic version of the jersey.

An embroidered version of it appears on the replica.

Besides the crest, there are other unique features on the 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey.

This includes the text “Honor Thy History” on the inner neckline of the authentic version of the jersey.

Elsewhere, a dark purple square with a gold X features as a jock tag in the bottom left hand corner of the jersey front – on both the authentic and replica.

The Roman Numeral for 10, this is a nod to Orlando City SC‘s 10th season in MLS.

This is a really nice touch, especially considering that no jock tag was included on the 2023 Orlando City SC home jersey.

As for The Legacy Kit as a whole, lavender shorts and lavender socks with red and dark purple accents complete the updated road look for Oscar Pareja‘s Lions.

To buy the 2024 Orlando City SC away jersey, this is always easier if you’re visiting Central Florida in person.

Currently available to purchase on MLSStore.com, this does involve infamous international shipping costs however.

Unfortunately for Brits, Kitbag.com ceased any updates to their Orlando City SC jersey inventory at the end of 2019.

Since 2022, even Adidas.co.uk and Pro:Direct Soccer haven’t stocked the Thick N Thin jersey, The Sunshine Kit or The Wall Kit.

As always, Orlando City UK will be doing some investigative work.
